Christ Lutheran Church

Second Sunday of Easter

April 19th 2020

Pastor: We make our beginning in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Congregation: Amen

Pastor: Christ is Risen!

Congregation: He is Risen, indeed. Alleluia!

Pastor: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God, Our Father, Beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

Our Help is in the name of the Lord.

Congregation: Who made Heaven and Earth.

Pastor: I said I will confess my transgression unto the Lord.

Congregation: And thou Forgave the Iniquity of my sin.

All: O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto Thee all my sins and iniquities, with which I have ever offend Thee and justly deserved Thy temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray Thee of thy boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Thy beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

Pastor: Upon this confession, I by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all of your sins in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Congregation: Amen.

The First Reading

Acts 5:29-42

29¬†But Peter and the apostles answered,¬†‚ÄúWe must obey God rather than men.¬†30¬†The God of our fathers¬†raised Jesus,¬†whom you killed by hanging him on¬†a tree.¬†31¬†God exalted¬†him at his right hand as¬†Leader and¬†Savior,¬†to give¬†repentance to Israel and¬†forgiveness of sins.¬†32¬†And¬†we are witnesses to these things, and¬†so is the Holy Spirit,¬†whom God has given to those who obey him.‚ÄĚ

33¬†When they heard this, they¬†were enraged and wanted to kill them.¬†34¬†But a Pharisee in the council named¬†Gamaliel,¬†a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little while.¬†35¬†And he said to them, ‚ÄúMen of Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men.¬†36¬†For¬†before these days Theudas rose up,¬†claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing.¬†37¬†After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of¬†the census and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished, and all who followed him were scattered.¬†38¬†So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for¬†if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail;¬†39¬†but¬†if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You¬†might even be found opposing God!‚ÄĚ So they took his advice,¬†40¬†and¬†when they had called in the apostles,¬†they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.¬†41¬†Then they left the presence of the council,¬†rejoicing that they were counted worthy¬†to suffer dishonor for¬†the name.¬†42¬†And every day,¬†in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and¬†preaching¬†that the Christ is Jesus.

Pastor: This is the word of the Lord.

Congregation: Thanks be to God.

Pastor: Forever, O Lord, Your Word is firmly set in the heavens.

Congregation: Lord, I love the habitation of Your House and the place where Your Glory dwells.

Pastor: Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it.

Congregation: Lord, I love the habitation of Your House and the place where Your Glory dwells.

Pastor:  Glory be to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Congregation: Lord, I love the habitation of Your House and the place where Your Glory dwells.

Epistle Reading

1 Peter 1:3-9

3¬†Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!¬†According to his great mercy,¬†he has caused us to be born again to a living hope¬†through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,¬†4¬†to¬†an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and¬†unfading,¬†kept in heaven for you,¬†5¬†who by God's power are being guarded¬†through faith for a salvation¬†ready to be revealed in the last time.¬†6¬†In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by¬†various trials,¬†7¬†so that¬†the tested genuineness of your faith‚ÄĒmore precious than gold that perishes¬†though it is tested by¬†fire‚ÄĒmay be found to result in¬†praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.¬†8¬†Though you have not seen him, you love him.¬†Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory,¬†9¬†obtaining¬†the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Pastor: This is the word of the Lord.

Congregation: Thanks be to God.

Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. John  the 20th Chapter.

Congregation: Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

Gospel Reading

John 20:19-31

19¬†On the evening¬†of that day, the first day of the week,¬†the doors being locked where the disciples were¬†for fear of the Jews,¬†Jesus came and stood among them and said to them,¬†‚ÄúPeace be with you.‚Ä̬†20¬†When he had said this,¬†he showed them his hands and his side. Then¬†the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.¬†21¬†Jesus said to them again,¬†‚ÄúPeace be with you. As¬†the Father has sent me,¬†even so I am sending you.‚Ä̬†22¬†And when he had said this, he¬†breathed on them and said to them,¬†‚ÄúReceive the Holy Spirit.¬†23¬†If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.‚ÄĚ

24¬†Now¬†Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin,¬†was not with them when Jesus came.¬†25¬†So the other disciples told him, ‚ÄúWe have seen the Lord.‚ÄĚ But he said to them,¬†‚ÄúUnless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.‚ÄĚ

26¬†Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them.¬†Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said,¬†‚ÄúPeace be with you.‚Ä̬†27¬†Then he said to Thomas,¬†‚ÄúPut your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.‚Ä̬†28¬†Thomas answered him,¬†‚ÄúMy Lord and my God!‚Ä̬†29¬†Jesus said to him,¬†‚ÄúHave you believed because you have seen me?¬†Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.‚ÄĚ

30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Congregation: Thanks be to God.

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

O Lord,

Have mercy upon us.

O Christ,

Have mercy upon us.

O Lord,

Have mercy upon us.

O Christ,

Have mercy upon us.

O God the Father in heaven,

Have mercy upon us.

O God the Son, Redeemer of the world,

Have mercy upon us.

O God the Holy Spirit, the Sanctifier,

Have mercy upon us.

Be gracious unto us.

Spare us, good Lord.

Be gracious unto us.

Help us, good Lord.

From all sin:

From all error:

From all evil:

Good Lord, deliver us.

From the techniques and attacks of the devil;

From death outside your grace;

From disease and want;

From war and violence;

From subversion and upheaval;

From lightning and or any storm;

From all disaster by fire and water;

And from everlasting death:

Good Lord, deliver us.

By the miracle of Your holy incarnation;

By Your holy nativity;

By Your baptism, fasting, and temptation;

By Your suffering and blood sweat;

By Your cross and Passion

By Your precious death and burial;

By Your glorious resurrection and ascension;

And by the coming of the Holy Spirit, the sanctifier:

Help us, good Lord.
In all times of our suffering;

In all times of our success;

In the hour of death;

And in the Day of Judgment:

Help us, good Lord.

We poor sinners do ask You

To hear us, O Lord God

And to rule and govern Your holy Christian Church;

To preserve all pastors and ministers of Your Church in the true knowledge and understanding of Your Word and in the holiness of life;

To put an end to all divisions and causes of offense;

To bring into the way of truth all such as have not believed and are deceived;

To send faithful laborers into Your harvest;

To accompany Your Word with Your Spirit so all may hear of Your grace;

To raise up them that fall to temptation to sin and to strengthen such as do stand firm in the faith;

And to comfort and help the weak and the distressed:

We ask You to hear us, good Lord.

To give to all nations peace and concord;

To preserve our country from conflict and controversy;

To give to our nation permanent victory over all our enemies;

To direct and defend our President and all who are in authority;

And to bless and keep our officials and all our people:

We ask You to hear us, good Lord.

To behold and help all who are in danger, need, and suffering:

To protect all who travel by land, air or sea;

To preserve all women in the hazards of childbirth;

To strengthen and help all sick persons and young children;

To set free all who are innocently imprisoned;

To defend and provide for all orphans and widows;

And to have mercy upon all people.

We ask You to hear us, good Lord.

To forgive our enemies, persecutors, and slanderers, and to turn their hearts;

To give and preserve to our use the fruits of the earth;

And graciously to hear our prayers:

We ask You to hear us, good Lord.

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God,

We ask You to hear us.

(Prayer Requests)

O Lamb of God, that takes away the sins of the world.

O Lamb of God, that takes away the sins of the world.

Grant us Your Peace.

O Christ,

Hear us.

O Lord,

Pastor: Lord, remember us and teach us to pray:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pastor: The Lord bless thee and keep thee

The Lord make His face to shine upon thee and be gracious unto thee, The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee and give thee peace.

Congregation: Amen, Amen, Amen.
